HOLY MONASTERY OF PANAGIA ELONA

Perched at 650m. high on the road from Leonidio to Kosmas, the monastery of Madona Elona pops up white, through the red cavernous rock. Known for its miraculous icon, the monastery was founded in the 16th century. Apart from admiring its miraculous image, the visitor can feel the sanctity through the austerity and the unique aura of space.

MONASTERY OF ST. NIKOLAOU SINTZA

At an altitude of 500 m, 6 km southwest of Leonidio we meet the Monastery of Saint Nicholas Sinzas in a cave on the Red Rock. According to mythology, Ino put Dionysos in this cave when he fell on the beach of Leonidio, where his mother Semeli had put him. Inside the monastery you can admire an elaborate carved temple with four striking images dating back to the mid-17th century.

HOLY MONASTERY OF SAINT NIKOLAOU KARYA

A famous monastery too is located at 870m. altitude between Oriontas and Paliohora. The interior of the cathedral is adorned with wall paintings of 1638 and has a marble floor of 1734.
